The car's heritage in the words of the son and daughter of the original owner:

"Dad, Wilhelm Alfred Wulff, aka Fred, was a young officer in Coast Guard when he ordered the 190SL in 1962 from the plant in Germany. Dad's father, Timm Alfred Wulff, and brother in law were going to Germany to visit relatives when Dad put in an order for the Mercedes. Dad said that they could drive it when they were in Germany. During its early years, the car was driven around Michigan while Dad captained ice breakers. Then driven to California where it was the daily driver on Hwy 1 performing lighthouse inspections for the Coast Guard. As all the servicemen, change of station were ~3 years involving moves from California to DC, back to the San Francisco Bay, Louisiana, DC and finally, back again to the City by the Bay and (the car was) retired for restoration. Dad did all the maintenance work on the car himself. He kept records in small notebooks of the mileage of each gas fill up and oil change. These records have been misplace during the restoration. In 2008 Fred embarked on the restoration process of the 190."
