This SL was ordered new by Mr. John McWilliams on May 26, 1955 from Pacific Motor Sales on Wilshire Blvd.
in Beverly Hills, CA as a Factory delivery. The total cost including leather and US specifications was $4,100.
McWilliams took delivery of the SL at the factory on July 15, 1955 and began his tour of Germany and France.
In late August 1955, he decided to explore England and flew the car aboard a Bristol 170 Mark 32 Superfreighter
across the English Channel. The UK International Driving Permit notes his arrival on August 24, 1955. After his touring abroad, McWilliams had the car shipped home aboard the Vancouver Star.

McWilliams, an engineer for McDonnell Douglas, was a very precise man and documented his entire trip with charming photographs of his travels. He also saved most of the documents from his trip and they survive today to tell a story about a unique man enjoying his coveted 190SL. This is one of the most comprehensively documented 190SLs I've ever encountered.

In addition to the photo and paperwork documentation of his trip through Germany and England, we have 60 individual service/restoration documents dating from 1980 forward. The original service booklet reveals service entries throughout his overseas trip. Mr. McWilliams handled most of his own maintenance once the car returned to California and retained the car until his passing at 94 years old in 2016. The car passed to his nephew and remains with him today. A single family owned California 190SL. And the 112th 190SL constructed.

The car was stored until early 2017 when the nephew decided to return the car to the road. 190SL experts, Burlingame Motors, were enlisted to bring the car back to life. The work performed included a full engine overhaul with a fresh cylinder head and crankshaft, Weber carburetor conversion, and a full brake system overhaul. These repair orders are included in the photo essay. And most ancillary systems were addressed as well. Pertronix electronic ignition was installed at this time. A total of approximately $35k was spent refurbishing the car.

The car was repainted decades ago and the paint reflects its age showing misc. flaws. Body shutlines and panel gaps remain essentially as constructed by Mercedes. Chrome wheel well 'eyebrow' trim was added and headlight bezels replaced when the car was painted. Grille assembly fit is perfect. Bumper alignment and chrome is excellent. All 5 wheels are original to the car and properly date coded. Original external sheet metal. Original floor panels except for a patch panel on the forward section of the passenger foot well. Original 158 white grey bumper backsides. The soft top was replaced during the car's recommissioning in 2018.

The red leather interior remains largely original and is in lovely shape. Interior chrome is in generally excellent condition as is the lovely ivory steering wheel. The car was fitted with simple lap belts many years ago. Aftermarket red carpet floor mats were installed 40+ years ago. Soft top well leather is exceptional.

As much an historical artifact as a collectible Mercedes-Benz SL, this 190SL has quite a story to tell. Its original owner, a renaissance man for sure, constructed his house in Long Beach, most of its furniture and much of his wife's jewelry.

Today it is 'on-the-button' and ready for touring. Sold 'as-is'.
